A rare breed indeed!

Whether it's Quest 64, Aidyn Chronicles, Paper Mario or Ogre Battle 64.

The console had 4 note-worthy titles from this genre.

Did anyone play either of these games, and are there any others on the platform you have fond memories of?

I recently got Hybrid Heaven, which as I know it is some sort of FPS, RPG hybrid I've barely played through myself, but it seems decent.

What about Hexen?

What about Hexen?

Hexen (Also known as Hexen: Beyond Heretic) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Raven Software, published by id Software, and distributed by GT Interactive beginning on September 30, 1995.

But please talk about Hexen. I am intrigued.

Oh yea. The doom mod. It was pretty awesome how the made it into an RPG.

Shadowgate got missed. If you aded Paper Mario then you may as well add Zelda. I haven't played many of the RPGs, will do it eventually though.

Depends on what you call an RPG. I would say the only one you are missing is gauntlet legends.

Of those I own Paper Mario and Gauntlet Legends, the other 2 (ogre battle was never released in PAL) I'm still trying to find at a decent price.

Honestly Paper Mario is fantastic! It will cost you >$100 PAL UK and expect to pay >$130 for PAL AU if your going for a boxed copy, the one I bought was PAL UK and was much cheaper if you can live with the black boarder.

I would also def say Hybrid heaven is a RPG but personally I didn't like it. The battle system just didn't work for me.

Luckily, I have a friend who has it, I just borrow it from him.

Skill was talking about it from a collectors prospective. At least so it seems.

Edit: Or mainly just the price you'd have to pay to get it.

That's why I don't collect things, too expensive.

I remember Paper Mario. It was fun, even though I got stuck at Huff n' Puff. He was so damn hard!

I'd probably go Virtual Console for it, but I know you're interested in owning the tangible copy. Same goes for Paper Mario, I'd be more inclined to buy a Virtual Console copy at the moment.

I would also def say Hybrid heaven is a RPG but personally I didn't like it. The battle system just didn't work for me.

Personally, I'm having difficulties getting into it as well. The entire time I'm just wanting to play a better game instead, since there are better I haven't finished yet. Sometime I'll force myself into the game and I'll exit victorious.

Yeah Virtual Console would be the way to go ogre battle 64 is on VC. I just don't go for VC as you said owning the game and collecting is half the fun for me (got a fair few 64 games now >60 and haven't played a lot of them), the real problem for VC I think is that you just don't get that 64 experience you get with the real hardware.

Give Holy Magic a try though Sean, looks good.

I own Gauntlet, but I don't have the expansion pak.

I want to slog through it, believe me I do.

I have Paper Mario. Very easy, but fun to 100% and abuse badge combos.

Shadowgate 64 and Aidyn Chronicles are pretty good games. Just mentioning since Shadowgate got left out.

I wish that they had made Mother 3 on the Nintendo 64! It would've been great to look at how everything would've been changed to 3D-good-ol'-blocky graphics!

Also, Paper Mario TTYD seems to give me butterflies in my stomach (or maybe it's a lone butterfly if my memory serves well) whenever I play it again, but I seem to remember the original Paper Mario more for some reason; no clue why.

There is one 64 RPG that looks good but was unreleased because Nintendo lost faith in the N64 Disk Drive. Earthbound 64 looked AMAZING. Too bad it wasn't released. But anyway the only RPG that I have played for the N64 was Paper Mario. Which makes me wonder if there is a ROM for Final Fantasy 64.

Do you mean the FF6 SGI thing? That was not built for the 64, if someone has it, it would be worth a fortune. It would exist some where though.

I'd kill to have played Mother 3 on the Nitnendo 64. I've seen screenshots of it, and I just think to myself what a wonderful world why didn't it see the light of day. I always wanted to play a 3D Earthbound game.

HAL wasn't exactly experienced with 3D. Even on the N64, they were making 2.5D games like Kirby 64 and Super Smash Bros.

I've only played two RPGs for N64, but one of them I played at an early age and at the time did not know what turn based RPGs were and thought it would've been a game where you control your character to fight, so I was disappointed at the time for that game wasn't what I was hoping from it, and sadly never played it since. (I wish I did, because I heard it was good) The game previously mentioned was Quest 64. But the only RPG game I did play and loved was Paper Mario.

I too would have loved to have played Mother 3 for the N64, but I still would rather have the game officially translated, and untouched in every other way to reach our shores, and our GBAs.

I haven't played the version that was created for the GBA, but I've seen several screenshots of it and have read plenty about it. I want it to be released in North America for the love of god! :p

Eh, you can buy a Japanese carts for about 40-60$, and all you need is a translation guide, then you are set.

That's what I did and it was totally worth it.

I've been trying to find the money for one, but I haven't had any luck.

I only played Paper Mario, but I preferred the Thousand-Year Door in every possible way.

Also, Zelda is an Action Adventure, not an RPG.
And going by those rules, Paper Mario Sticker Star is looking more and more like an Action Adventure with turn-based battles than an RPG.

Well, it does have RPG aspects, quests, rewards, and upgraded items. They just seem to be taking a new look at how they can make it.

It almost seems like they're combining both genres together somewhat. Keeping some elements of the RPG, and some of the action adventure genre.

I hope it's as fun as it looks!
