Doctor V64 - Part 2

Posted 07-30-2011 at 08:35 PM by Torrentstorm

This is part two of my Doctor V64 blog.

Most of the images in this blog are just random images I took whilst fixing the V64's. Everybody loves images.

So, I finally got around to fixing my Doctor V64's. It was a bit more than just power supply problems. I wanted to clean the V64's since they had gotten dirty over the years. That cheap plastic really gets dirty easily. So I disassembled it and cleaned it as well as I could.

So as I've got some parts to replace (Especially those stupid audio cables), I decide to put it back together a lot more professionally than I've done before. In this case, super carefulness and putting in all the screws this time.

I really hate how long the data cable is on the bloody V64. The only size I can find in stores are 10cm, this is like 20-30cm.

The main problem I've always had is putting the V64 back together. There are five cables that go all over the place. When assembling, the cables will either be in an unsuitable position, stuck somewhere or the V64 just won't close properly. Planning how the cables are placed is the best thing I could do. One thing I really want to avoid is getting any cables near where screws are supposed to go, never happened to me but would be rather troublesome (This is because most of the cables in the V64 are custom cables made by the creators).

I used tape on some areas to make sure things stay perfect. There's a long cable that only needs like one inch between both connecting areas yet the length is like 15cm ... They really should have had some fixed sizes. In another case, I had to tape a cable to make sure that four wires stayed together.

The best part of the entire process is inserting the RAM cards. It's nice and simple and is done after all the cables are put in place.

There is the final version. Put together perfectly. This is the second Doctor V64, the first version came with white buttons (I believe).

I really like how there's just a lot of things you can do with the cartridge connector. You can insert an N64 cartridge, put on a Doctor V64 cover () and finally, add an adapter to connect to the N64's extension port. All features included in the box. Nice way to dump, play and look at the V64.

In the final picture, I show the white V64. That is the first version. I like how I have both  Both of them have DVD players, one white and one black to suit the colours.

It's a really nice device, really worth getting. Not sure nowadays though, there are waaaay cheaper alternatives such as the ones I posted in this thread.

So, that pretty much sums up my repairs. In Part 3 I will have a nice video showing off the awesomeness of the Doctor V64.

They are no more valuable than $270 complete with N64, most of them will be overpriced at ebay. The site we were talking about in the staff forum has some for sale ATM for $260 I believe.

Going to get part 3 of this up soon.
