Hate to extend this digression, but @Husky:

I think the reason Gary is included less is because once he stopped appearing initially, newer audiences didn't know who he was. With the viewers of the anime constantly being recycled it's hard to bring back old characters, since they hold no place in the hearts and minds of new audiences. I hope that makes sense.
