Heart of Darkness Review

Heart of Darkness (HoD as it will be referred to as), despite it's title is a surprising game. The game shows the protagonist, Andy, a young boy who goes to the park and his Whiskey is stolen by an unknown enemy. Andy runs back home and climbs up his treehouse via an elaborate system created by himself. Once in the treehouse many of Andy's creations can be seen. He then clambers into his crude spaceship and travels to the Darklands. The antagonist of the game is an evil creature, the Master of Darkness who using his magic rules over the Darklands. But why must this boy run around a dark, shadow infested area alone?! And for what? Well that's simple. Whiskey, of course (One drunk boy). His dog.

HoD keeps you on your toes, you never know what's going to jump out at you. The game is filled with action, you play through the game destroying shadows by using a weapon which fires an electrical-energy-beam-sorz. Even though you do not get to use the electrical-energy-beam-sorz throughout the entire game, the game still remains kick ass.

What's this? In your adventure looking for whiskey you can die over one hundred unique ways? The game is E-Rated is it not? Get eaten by shadows, sea monsters and water plants. Falling down a cliff has never been so much fun.

Most straight off the bat you find yourself losing your original weapon but later you'll find another to take it's place. This new power allows you to fire a green energy from your hand, as opposed to the blue electrical charge omitted from the gun.

On your super sexy awesome adventure to find Whiskey, you'll come across some strange creatures. One of which being Amigos. These things look like a frog was spliced with a bird. But despite their appearences these guys are actually on your side (hence the name, clever, no?) and their job is to help you on your adventure. They live on an island which is flipped upside down (Australia?) and they can't touch the Shadow's ground which will kill them.

Most boys would have gone to get a new dog, we all can understand tears pouring down his face but leaving with a weapon because of some solar eclipse? Your dog was taken by mistake, it was supposed to be you, do you understand what type of issues you have caused for your puppy... I mean Whiskey. Thanks to you he is dead scared in a slimy prison underground. The guard being a slimy ant eater who constantly emit-ulates slime out of his beaky long nose.

The game is filled with random things such as plants that you MUST avoid at all costs, eggs that when fired at with your energy beam with transform into a useful tool for the environment your in (for example: trees you can climb to reach new areas). Despite some random things the game has a lot of basic platformer elements.

There are a lot of other enemies apart from shadows. There are also Shadows... in water! Well actually, yeah, there are others. There are strange creatures in armor which look similar to cows. Upon attacking these armored up cows they'll split into two brains, if the brains aren't destroyed quickly enough they will each turn into a cow. It can get pretty heavy if this happens a lot. Also there are worm-like creatures which attack you as you climb the mountain face. They will fly at you and pull you into their caves/homes and devour poor Andy.

This is the only game would such an extremely misleading cover. You see a little boy with his dog and a shadow stalking from behind, this tells you "I'm a kids game, buy me". Not what the parents expected. Most likely had some parents return the game to the store due to all the death and because the game is so hard.

Rating:

Story: The story is not only pretty good for being as stupid as it is but, also comes with a lot of awesome cinematic that were amazing at it's time and still are.

9.8
Graphics: The graphics were just pure awesome. Looked great and fantastic. However, the characters differ drastically.

9.5
Sound: The sound is great and has a plenty amount of effects. all sounds excellent. It all got orchestrated.

9.2
Gameplay: The gameplay was funny, frustrating and very interesting despite it's many ways to die. The game brought it all in for an extremely entertaining experience.

10
Replayability: The replayability is not that great, but you might end up playing the game again not so long after. Simply put, the game never gets old but it might not be the same if you play it all the time. Due to the fact that you will always start from the beginning.

8.4
Difficulty: The difficulty is extreme at some parts. But this is an excellent type of difficulty of which will make you get stuck very often. Requires you to use your brain. This is an excellent aspect.

Overall score: A well deserved 9.5!
